We wanted HOWL’s BarCoal campfires to do two things that generally don’t go together: get humans alarmingly warm and leave the ground underneath completely unbothered.
Making the heat was one problem. Aiming it was another.
Bar Coal Technology creates the deep radiant heat that makes a bed of wood coals feel so damn good. But without something controlling those rays, a bunch of that heat would blast straight toward the dirt. That would be great if we were trying to warm the worms.
We are not.
That’s why we built the EchoHeat Reflector Shield.
Flames Are Mostly Useless at Making You Warm
Traditional propane fire pits make plenty of flame. The problem is that flames mostly heat the air, and hot air does what hot air has always done: it rises. Add a little wind and your expensive propane is now warming a patch of sky somewhere downwind.
This is why you can sit six inches from a massive propane flame and still wonder whether anyone packed another jacket.
Wood fires feel different because of the coals. Glowing coals throw off infrared rays that travel directly into your body. They don’t need to warm all the air between you and the fire first. They just hammer straight through wind, rain, and cold until they hit something full of water.
Conveniently, that’s you.
BarCoal recreates that coal heat with propane. The tubes absorb energy from the combustion happening inside them, glow piping hot, and throw off the same kind of deep radiant heat that makes you rotate around a wood fire like a gas-station hot dog.
But once we had that heat, we still had to keep it from roasting everything equally.
Heat Doesn’t Know Where Your Legs Are

Radiant heat travels in straight lines. That makes it a lot like light: point it at something, and that thing absorbs the energy. Put an obstacle in the way, and it creates a shadow.
The BarCoal tube doesn’t know that your cold thighs are sitting off to the side while a perfectly innocent patch of ground is directly underneath it. Left alone, it will happily radiate heat in both directions.
So we put a precisely angled piece of electropolished stainless steel beneath it.
The EchoHeat Reflector Shield catches the rays headed toward the ground and redirects them outward, where your torso, legs, and feet can put them to use. Instead of digging a tiny thermal hole to China, the heat spreads through camp.
The geometry looks simple because finished things usually do. Getting it right required modeling, prototypes, testing, failed ideas, new prototypes, more testing, and the gradual realization that infrared light is extremely unwilling to negotiate.
Yes, The Shiny Fin Matters
The electropolished finish isn’t there because we thought the inside of a campfire needed more jewelry.
A rough or dirty surface absorbs more radiant energy. A smooth, highly reflective surface sends more of it somewhere useful. Electropolishing gives the EchoHeat Reflector Shield the reflective surface it needs while also making it easier to keep clean.
Its location protects that finish from the flame, grime, and general abuse that wreck exposed reflector surfaces. It stays tucked inside the campfire, doing its job without requiring batteries, a fan, an app, or a firmware update.

The result is a pretty absurd contrast. The BarCoal above is absolutely ripping, your thighs are approaching rotisserie status, and the ground beneath the campfire stays cool.
That doesn’t happen by accident. BarCoal creates the radiant energy. The EchoHeat Reflector Shield controls where it goes. The rest of the campfire manages airflow, combustion, weather, and all the other things required to keep the system cranking when conditions turn ugly.
You still have to use your brain. Every HOWL is a powerful outdoor gas appliance, and a campfire that gets knocked over is no longer pointing its heat where we designed it to go. Set it up correctly, maintain proper clearances, and follow the operating instructions.
“Cool ground” is an engineering achievement, not permission to do something stupid.
Every Part Has To Earn Its Ride

We don’t add decorative covers to make HOWL campfires look complicated. We add parts when they solve real problems.
The EchoHeat Reflector Shield solves two at once. It puts more BarCoal heat into cold people and less into the ground. It makes the campfire feel hotter without solving the problem the dumb way—burning a ridiculous amount of additional propane.
That’s the whole idea behind HOWL: make the warmth of a real wood fire work anywhere, including the places where wood is wet, banned, dangerous, or just a massive pain in the ass.
