Troubleshooting

5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR HOWL

Just five questions make up 90% of HOWL’s customer service inquiries. If you know the answers, you can skip straight ahead to enjoying your new Campfire!

#1: "Whoa! Is the top supposed to flex like that?"

Yep! That’s the HOWL's FlexDome Windscreen. The A-Flame Burner uses a proprietary horizontal windscreen to keep your flames protected from the wind, while also completely exposed. It's a completely different solution that hides the flames behind vertical walls, like most traditional fire pits.

The FlexDome Windscreen uses laminar separation to keep the wind sliding over the top, while the pocket of air below stays calm. When heated, the metal screen naturally flexes upward to create a larger air pocket that builds a taller flame. As the metal cools, it flattens back down.

#2: "Oh no! It won't light!"

Something is blocking the fuel flow. It might be your hose connections. Just make sure the black cuff of the hose is tightened all the way onto the tank, and make sure the quick connect is locked onto the HOWL. It might be your tank. Does it have fuel?

But the most common issue is that one of the safety valves got tripped, which stops or limits the flow of fuel. To reset the safety valve, here’s what to do:

  1. Turn the A-Flame and BarCoal knobs on your HOWL to OFF.
  2. Turn the knob of your tank to CLOSED.
  3. Turn the red knob on the hose to OFF (Counter-clockwise).
  4. SLOWLY turn the knob on the tank to OPEN.
  5. SLOWLY turn the red knob on the hose to ON (clockwise).

NOTE: If you turn on the tank or the hose too fast, you could trip the safety valves again. So turn 'em at a moderate speed.

Now that the safety valves are reset, continue with the lighting instructions printed right there on your HOWL.

#3: What’s up with the black stuff?

In breezy conditions, the flames can leave carbon deposits on the FlexDome Windscreen and A-Flame burner plate. This is normal. The A-Flame runs with a little less oxygen in order to produce those signature bright yellow flames. And in windy conditions, this rich fuel mix can leave carbon behind.

Carbon deposits do not affect the function of your HOWL, but they can rub off in places you don't want them to. That also means they're super easy to remove.

Once your HOWL cools, simply wipe the top with a moist rag or paper towel, or tip it up on end and spray it down with a hose.

#4: Are the flames supposed to get smaller in the cold?

Nope! But there's an easy fix. In cold weather, the tank can freeze and gradually lose fuel pressure. If that happens, here’s what to do:

  1. Turn the A-Flame off, but leave the BarCoals burning.
  2. Move the tank into a warmer location.
  3. Once the tubes are glowing as normal, turn the flames back on and use your HOWL like youalways do.

If it’s reeeaaallly cold out, the regulator hose can freeze (this is less common). If your tank has plenty of

fuel, isn’t frozen, and yet your HOWL still isn’t working properly, disconnect the hose and stick it in your coat or vehicle for a few minutes to thaw out. Then reconnect it and follow the lighting instructions as usual.

#5: (R4 only) Why is one BarCoal glowing, but the other dark?

A piece of debris is caught in the fuel jet on the dark side. To clear the debris, first try the air compressor method in the video below. If this doesn’t work, shoot us a note at support@howlcampfires.com and we’ll trouble shoot it with you via FaceTime
