How do exposed flames make your tank last longer?
When you hide your flame at the bottom of a box, you have to crank the fuel just to get the flame to appear above the walls. That drains your tank. Since the R1 has no walls, every bit of fuel you burn becomes light you can use.
What size tank should you use?
We recommend a 10-, 11-, or 20-pound tank. Which one you choose just depends on your space requirements and how far it is to your next resupply.
Is the flame adjustable?
Yep. The R1 comes with an infinitely adjustable pressure regulator, so you can adjust the flame height to your exact needs.
How can it make taller flames with less fuel?

Love the size, heat it gives off is great! the mountain bracket fits perfectly to the unit. No vibration. Ease of operation. Quick to set up.
Unbeknownst to us a statewide fire ban went into effect while we were camping in Idaho. We were all sitting and enjoying our new R1 when suddenly we had a visit from the rangers who were surprised to find out we weren’t burning wood but instead using propane. They were kind and told us we were fine to keep enjoying the fire. We were so glad the fun wasn’t interrupted thanks to our new R1. We absolutely love it!
We’ve had it a week now and used it every single night. The kids have loved sitting around the fire and telling stories and listening to music. Absolutely have loved it.

This thing is awesome! Used it for 2 nights (until midnight or so) and 2 mornings. Used about half of a 7 gallon tank of propane on med/high. Also puts out good heat for its size.

Love it. Put it to use immediately! Simple to set up and light. Perfect flames. They mimic a campfire perfectly.
It was perfect! Went camping with the family in Colorado during the stage 2 fire ban. It was perfect for warmth, ambiance, and roasting marshmallows. There were 8 of us. We would have preferred the medium size over the small but it was unavailable at the time. The small was wonderful. A ranger drove by our camp while the Howl was running but he didn't stop. I would assume he knew without smoke or smell we were following protocols. We are quite pleased to have found the Howl.
Once you get past the price its an amazing portable fire pit. If you have limited space and weight restrictions it is perfect. Runs in wind and puts out a good amount of heat. Cant wait to take it more places. Wish the R4 was a little less expensive would love to have one of those for the house or cabin seems like a beast of a fire pit!
Used it on one trip now and loved it. I've really been missing campfires in Colorado and this being fireban approved, it really made camping what it used to be. Sitting around talking and joking around the fire again. It worked great and puts off a lot of heat even on low. I have a 15lb tank and used it for 2 nights without any worry of running out. 10/10 would buy again.
I love this campfire. Easy to set up, a flame that looks and feels real, and a place to gather for family and friends when the sun goes down. I will use this even when the fire restrictions are lifted in Colorado. Why, all the benefits without the smell that lingers for days. Highly recommend.

I’m a full-time RVer who enjoys sitting outside by the fire in the evening. Six years ago I bought a typical propane fire pit and was instantly disappointed by its lack of flame. Not long ago it finally found its way into the dumpster; it was too heavy and took up too much space in the RV for something that rarely got used anymore. Then along came the Howl R1; a third the weight and size of the old fire pit, and it actually puts out an enjoyable flame. I’ve fired it up every night since receiving it, even during the Stage 2 fire ban. It’s great having a fire I can light up when and where I want, transforming the outdoors into a comfortable additional living space.
Amazing. With the amount t of heat this thing throws out I assumed it would be using a lot of propane. Not the case we’ve ran it now for 5 days on a 10lb tank and it still going. Very well built

Went up to Park County, Colorado for a 5 day/4 night camping trip with a group. Due to the current fire ban and dryness of Colorado we didn't dare have a wood fire. That is where this came in clutch. It's small footprint allowed for easy packing but the punch it packs is beyond its misleading size. A large group of about 5-6 people were around this and able to keep warm in the 50-60 degree weather without issue. One 20 gallon propane tank lasted all 4 nights on max settings with a massive flame coming out. The only complaint (if there can be one) is the lack of the crackle of a fire. But, this is the perfect substitute to have when in a burn ban and wanting to enjoy a fire with family and friends. I 10/10 recommend this product! I have nothing but respect for the company based out of Colorado. I am excited to go on more adventures with this thing as I am taking it EVERYWHERE.
The R1 arrived just before our last camping trip. It’s awesome! Really puts out the heat even on low! Love it!
Really love the design and I got the bag to go with the r1, looks and feels amazing. This is my first time using it and I’m unimpressed with the level of noise it makes. Even turning down the flame results in no change to the whine/hissing. Is this normal output?
Store owner replied: Howdy Christopher, Thanks for the feedback! Your R1 looks to be performing as intended. While we'd love to make our campfires completely silent, it's just not possible. High-pressure propane flowing through tiny burner ports will always create some sound. That said, we put a lot of effort into the design of the A-Flame burner to minimize it, and we've managed to get the sound level down to just a few decibels quieter than a normal conversation. One thing you can try is dialing back the pressure a bit using the red regulator knob. This will noticeably reduce the sound while still maintaining a nice size flame. Hope this helps!
I had high expectations for The Howl R1. It exceeded them. Phenomenal product, looks great, beyond impressive heat output, flames are awesome, built to last, made in the USA and unbelievable value for $374. What else do you possibly want. I really enjoy it wish the flames were higher. But definitely worth it.
This thing is small but mighty. Holds up in wind and rain. Radiant heat is surprisingly warm and the adjustable flame is nice. No more getting smoked out around campfires. Worth the investment and built to last!
